Sketchbook stories: Spring Wheels

As I cycled home from work this evening – wearing just a t-shirt (at last!) in the warm breeze – the early evening sun was coating London with its golden hour glow. Today was properly warm and the whole city has a spring in its step. Somewhere over Waterloo Bridge I resolved to post more on this blog, and update my site with all of the drawing I’ve been doing over the last few weeks.

As I was turning my pedals, I also realised that it is exactly a year since my bike arrived in the office in an incredibly large box and I braved the mean streets on my first ever cycle home from Holborn to Balham. All I really remember is skirting the Elephant & Castle round-about, getting cramp in my toes and a cracking sunset over Clapham Common. A year on – and only one quick self-inflicted trip over my handlebars later – cycling has totally changed the way I look at London, and the way I whizz around.

Last week a doodle-y lunch break ended up with me making this quick drawing of my trusty Foffa wheels.

Thankfully the wheels aren’t quite so wonky in real life, but I like how it turned out – especially for a 15 minute drawing. Having posted a quick snap of the drawing on Instagram I was also totally chuffed that Foffa posted a comment about my drawing AND posted it on their Facebook page and Twitter.

Inspired by my bicycle drawing, I also made this birthday card I made for a good friend of mine last week, but it seems a good way of saying happy birthday to my bike too.

Birthday bike and balloonsI am working on plenty of ideas for different cards at the moment. Lots of my best ideas seem to pop into my brain as my head clears on my bike, so for now I better keep cycling and basking in the novelty of sunshine and ever longer evenings.
